Meibomian Gland Disorder

Learn how Gulfcoast Eye Center diagnoses and treats Meibomian Gland Disorder using technologies such as LipiFlow.

What is Meibomian Gland Disorder?

The meibomian glands are located in the eyelids and help with the production of the oily layer of our tears.  This layer helps with protecting the surface of the eyes from disease and keeps the tears from evaporating too quickly. Without the proper production of these oils, our eyes become more susceptible to discomforts associated with dry climates, air conditioning, and computer use.

Meibomian Gland Disorder (MGD) occurs when the function and/or structure of the meibomian glands of the eye become compromised.  Symptoms include  burning, scratching, and redness sensations in your eye.

Diagnosing MGD

To help diagnose MGD, we will take a high definition image of your glands.  This allows us to evaluate the glands and gland structure.

We will also observe the blink health of your eyes, ultimately by determining the completion rate of each blink.  Blinking is crucial to maintaining proper gland function. Reduction in gland function corresponds with symptoms of eye discomfort and redness.

Treatment of MGD with Lipiflow

Lipiflow is the only FDA-cleared device for treating MGD by removing gland blockage and restoring gland function through the application of Vectored Thermal Pulsation technology. This treatment applies heat to the inner eyelids and gently massages them to remove obstructions in the glands.  The treatment takes about 15 mins.
