Glaucoma Treatment at Gulfcoast Eye Center
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is crucial for vision.
Optic nerve damage is often related to abnormally high pressure in the eye (called intraocular pressure or IOP), but glaucoma can also occur with normal eye pressure. Over time, glaucoma can lead to progressive vision loss and, if left untreated, permanent blindness. Most of the time there are no symptoms of glaucoma until it is too late. That is why routine eye examinations are so important.
The types of glaucoma are as follows: primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), angle-closure glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma (NTG), secondary glaucoma, and congenital glaucoma. The most common form is open-angle glaucoma.
Our office diagnoses and treats a lot of glaucoma. Most patients can be treated with topical medications, though some may require surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for preventing permanent vision loss.
